Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most commonly-occurring type of diabetes. This form of diabetes usually occurs in adults but is becoming more common in children and adolescents.

In Type 2 diabetes, the body is able to produce insulin but the insulin produced is either insufficient or the body is unable to respond to its effects. This leads to a build up of glucose in the blood.

People with Type 2 diabetes often need to take tablets or insulin to help the body’s supply of insulin work better.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious global public health problem:

• Contributes more than 85% of total burden of diabetes in developing countries
• Rapid increase in the number of people with Type 2 diabetes globally
