Diabetes Day Celebration - Funyula Medical Camp

World Diabetes Day celebrations were marked by a free community medical camp at Nangina Girls Primary School, Funyula, on 17 November 2012. The Chief Guest, Dr Patrick Waihenya, representing Hon Beth Mugo, Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, read the World Diabetes Day speech. The camp was graced by Hon. Moody Awori; the area MP Hon. Paul Otuoma, Minister for Local Government; Dr Nancy Ngugi, Chairman, DMI; Dr Eva Njenga and was sponsored by Safaricom Foundation.

More than 2700 community members were screened for various ailments. The diabetes, dental and eye clinics had a busy day: 131 people with diabetes, including 10 people with previously undiagnosed diabetes were treated. This was in addition to the 14 wounds and 75 people with hypertension treated in the clinic. More than 135 people with various dental problems were treated in the dental clinic while more than 600 people were screened in the eye clinic. 18 cataract surgeries were conducted and about 100 people received free reading glasses.

The camp provided a fitting end to the world diabetes week!
