STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY DIABETES SCREENING AND EDUCATION AWARENESS IN CENTRAL KENYA
A one-year Rockefeller Foundation-funded project commenced in January 2012.

Project objectives
 Educate the community about risk factors for diabetes and the need for intensified preventive measures
 Stress the importance of early random blood sugar testing as a preventive measure to delay diabetes complications and promote improved lifestyles
 Raise public awareness about the complications of diabetes and the role that a healthy lifestyle, screening, diagnosis, education, treatment and support services play in controlling diabetes
 Promote the importance of support systems for better self-care management
 Educate families, friends and community members on the information they need to support people found to be diabetic for better blood sugar control

Recent activities
 Awareness and screening campaigns held in three centres in Nyeri district: Kieni West, Nyeri Town and Mukurweini
 >1000 community members completed a demographic data collection tool, screened for diabetes and hypertension; and educated on diabetes
